Compositing & clipping

Blend modes, feather, crop and border radius all apply at the same shared seam that every layer effect renders through.

Composite groups

This page covers blend modes — for how a group itself behaves as a clip on the timeline (its own span, nested rows, trimming to show or hide), see the Groups page.

Switching a layer group’s blend mode isn’t a different container — it’s just a mode on the same group you already have, so switching modes never re-wraps or restructures your layers.

ModeEffect
passA plain group — members paint independently (the default).
unionMembers composite together as one single unit.
subtractThe bottom member cuts a hole out of everything stacked above it.
intersectOnly the area where every member overlaps survives.
excludeOverlapping areas between members are knocked out, like a boolean XOR.
maskOne or more members are flagged as masks and union into a stencil; every other member shows only through it.

Every mode except pass works uniformly across shapes, text, video, images and nested comps, because it isolates the whole group into its own offscreen buffer rather than special-casing per layer type.

Feather

Every layer has a single, keyframeable feather value that softens its edge. It’s implemented at one shared seam, so the same feather control softens a plain layer’s own alpha edge, a mask group’s stencil edge, or an adjustment layer’s scope matte — for example the soft edge on a tracker-driven blur region.

Crop & border radius

Also universal, on every visual layer, applied at the same box-clipping point. Border radius rounds the corners of the layer’s rendered box, and applies uniformly to images, videos, drawings and nested comps. Shape layers have their own separate, richer per-vertex corner radius, covered on the canvaspage — this universal one rounds the whole layer’s box.

Crop is four independent, DaVinci/Figma-style pixel insets — top, right, bottom and left — each keyframeable on its own, all zero by default.

Because feather, crop and border radius all apply at the same seam as every layer effect, they compose together for free — crop a video, round its corners, and feather the result, all on the same layer, with no special ordering to think about.
