changelog

Every release, in order.

AtomCut ships often. Here's what changed — pulled straight from our GitHub releases.

  1. v3.8.0

  2. v3.7.1

    ### Fixed - **Lightning is about three times lighter,** on the stage, in the effect preview and in export, so it no longer tips the preview into "Heavy". On iPad and Safari it now glows, instead of drawing bare lines. - **The effect preview says when a card does nothing at the playhead** (for example, keyed off or to zero there) instead of showing the same Before and After, and jumps you to the card's next key. --- ## Installing ### macOS AtomCut is not yet notarized, so on first launch Gatekeeper will say the app "is damaged and can't be opened" or "cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified." This is expected for unsigned builds. After dragging **AtomCut** into **Applications**, clear the quarantine flag once: ```sh xattr -cr /Applications/AtomCut.app ``` Then open it normally. (Alternatively: right-click the app → **Open** → **Open**.) ### Windows SmartScreen may warn on first run. Choose **More info → Run anyway**. ### Linux - **AppImage:** `chmod +x AtomCut-*.AppImage && ./AtomCut-*.AppImage` - **Debian/Ubuntu:** `sudo dpkg -i AtomCut-*.deb` --- Once installed, AtomCut keeps itself up to date automatically — new versions are offered in-app and install on relaunch.
  3. v3.7.0

    ### Added - **Effect preview controls:** pick what the preview runs (this card alone, the stack up to it, or the whole stack) and what surrounds the layer (the scene, only what's beneath it, or nothing). Resolution follows your zoom, or pin it to Full, ½ or ¼. - **Play and pause in the effect preview.** A card too heavy to play live waits for you to press play, then builds its loop and plays it smoothly from memory. - **Film damage: Frame slips.** The print jumping a frame is now its own switch, and it starts off. Projects that already had slips keep them. ### Fixed - **Effect previews no longer slow the app down.** The preview renders only the layer you're tuning over a still copy of the scene, keeps its loop in memory, and leaves most of the machine to the rest of the app. - **Tuning a card in the middle of a stack is faster, on the stage too:** the cards beneath it are computed once instead of on every change.
  4. v3.6.1

    ### Fixed - **No more lines along scaled scenes:** a nested scene scaled inside another no longer shows a thin dark border at its top and bottom edges, in playback or in the exported video. - **Exports match the stage:** a nested scene stays inside its box in the export, as it does on the canvas. Precomposed groups, drawings and imported SVGs still show everything that reaches past their edge. - **Renaming a frame on the canvas** edits the title in place, instead of showing it twice.
  5. v3.6.0

    ### Added - **AtomCut Pro, two ways:** Yearly at $29 (the first 7 days free), or Lifetime at $59 once for the first 300. Existing Lifetime keys stay Lifetime, AI included. - **The upgrade dialog shows both plans** side by side. Pick one and check out on Gumroad. ### Changed - **Agents over MCP are part of Pro,** the same as the built-in chat. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and friends get a clear message and the upgrade dialog opens. - **Cancelling Yearly keeps Pro until the year you paid for ends.** - **Export:** the HD/4K button offers the free week.
  6. v3.5.0

    ### Added - **Audio mixer:** a channel strip for every sound category, docked at the timeline's right edge (Window ▸ Audio mixer). Meters turn red when a sound gets too loud, a clip light catches peaks, and while stopped each meter shows how loud the moment under the playhead is. Faders, mute and solo per category. - **Sound categories:** Dialogue, Music, Effects and Ambience, plus your own. Route any layer (or a whole nested scene) into one; each category has its own level, effect chain, loudness target and ducking. Open a category from any layer's Sound tab to see and edit everyone in it. - **Smart leveler:** keeps every sound where its kind should sit and nothing too loud, measuring each sound once in the background. Levels by category or all together, with strength, tame-loud, lift-quiet and a speech leveler. A limiter guards the master. Turn it on or off per export. - **Ducking rules:** music gets out of the way of the voice, starting just before the first word. Any clip or category can duck under a category, a layer or a whole scene. - **A frame's Sound tab:** the comp's leveler, master, limiter and categories in one place. - **Every comp keeps its own playhead,** saved with the project. Scrubbing one scene no longer moves the others. ### Changed - **Softer typing sounds:** the default keyboard click is a real click now, not a piercing tone, and export sounds exactly like playback. - **Agents keep timelines tidy:** new layers reuse free lanes, moves and trims say when a neighbour blocks, and there are page and category commands. ### Fixed - **Nested clips show the right moment at every depth:** a trimmed nested clip no longer shows a later part of itself than the playhead says. - **Editing one keyframe's scale no longer changes another.** X and Y are keyed together. - **At a cut, the selected clip's last frame shows,** so you see the keyframe you're editing. - **Shine runs edge to edge** with no pause, leaves nothing parked after a single pass, and its position can be keyframed. - **Filled paths no longer get a surprise outline;** keyframed fonts load; groups can be animated by agents. - **No click when a sound is cut off** by the end of its scene in exports. - **Frame titles, guides and handles stay sharp** at 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 preview resolution — only the artwork softens. - **Shadows, blur, glow and boil stay crisp when you zoom in,** including on nested scenes. Grain, halftone and pixelate still match the exported pixels. - **A video's own sound goes through the mixer** while playing — its category, the leveler, ducking and the meters. - **Motion blur strength and shutter can be animated,** and agents can set them. - **Styled text after a counting number stays put:** "+" styled after "0" is still the "+" after "40".
  7. v3.4.0

    ### Added - **Line boil:** make any drawing, image, text or vector feel hand-drawn. Its lines redraw themselves on their own frame rate, like cel animation. Choose boil, wobble or jitter, how many drawings loop, shake and twist, or start from a preset (Line boil, Sketchy, Jelly wobble, Hand-held). - **Lightning follows the drawn line:** with a Draw animation or a trimmed stroke, outline lightning sparks only along the part that's drawn, so the energy chases the pen. - **Agent apps stay current:** Claude Code and other agent apps now learn from the AtomCut version you have open, so new features reach them without updating the bridge. They can also report problems, just like the built-in chat. - **Agents know the effects:** which effect suits which job (boil, roughen, goo, glass, goo + glass, lightning and more), how to check heavy scenes without slowing your machine, and how counting numbers tick and step. ### Fixed - **Effects work on iPad:** blur, adjust, glow, extra shadows, shine and light rays, lens flare streaks, film damage, scanlines, halftone and pixelate softness, bevel, stroke softness, blur animations and per-letter blur now render on iPad and in Safari. The GPU still does the work wherever it can. - **Animated effects are much lighter:** grain, glitch, roughened edges, noise and Line boil render once per step and reuse looping drawings, so a paused or playing project no longer redraws them every frame. Boil on a large, mostly empty pixel layer skips the empty areas. - **No more crash when you hold a finger still to start drawing** on a tablet ("getCoalescedEvents"). - **Agents can key a stroke's trim, dash, taper and wave,** which the draw-on recipe needed.
  8. v3.3.3

    ### Fixed - **Steps is a proper number field:** drag to scrub, type and press Enter, or clear it for Auto — no more half-typed values applying as you type. - **No more console error** from counting numbers in the Animate tab's rhythm view.
  9. v3.3.2

  10. v3.3.1

  11. v3.3.0

  12. v3.2.3

    ### Added - **Collapse or expand every group in one click:** a new button in the timeline's top-left corner, beside Sort and Tidy. - **Your agent app's step history survives a reload** (and an update), per project. ### Fixed - **The "u is not a function" crash** that took the left panels down while an agent app worked, or when you left the Agents panel. It came from a scroll call that newer Chrome versions answer with a Promise. - **Selecting a layer now scrolls the timeline to its row,** not just to its time, and opens any collapsed groups it's inside.
  13. v3.2.2

    ### Fixed - **One panel failing no longer takes down the whole left column.** Each panel (Library, Media, Layers, Plugins, Agents) now recovers on its own: it shows "<name> couldn't draw", the others keep working, and switching back retries without a reload.
  14. v3.2.1

    ### Changed - **Shortcut sets show their app's logo:** AtomCut, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve and Blender, as four tiles with just the name. ### Fixed - **Scroll areas no longer show a handle when there's nothing to scroll.** Hovering a short list used to fade in a stale scrollbar left over from a longer one, and a list taller than its box by only its own padding showed a bar that seemed frozen. Seen on every Settings tab; fixed everywhere.
  15. v3.2.0

    ### Added - **See your agent app work.** While Claude Code (or Codex, Cursor…) is linked, the Agents panel shows who's connected and every step it takes, live, with render thumbnails, grouped by request, each with its own Undo. If you also have a model connected, the chat stays and the link sits in a slim strip above it. ### Changed - **The zoom and view controls stay top-right.** A wide tool bar now scrolls sideways instead of pushing them down a row. - **Focus mode moved into Stage settings ▸ View** as a switch (⌘\ still works). The view cluster lost its separators and its zoom readout got narrower. - **An agent app's request is one undo step,** the same as the built-in agent's. ### Fixed - **Settings ▸ Appearance:** the colour rows were empty. Their fields collapsed to nothing; they show the swatch, hex and picker again. - **Agents:** the welcome screen ran off the top of a short panel with no way to scroll.
  16. v3.1.0

    ### Added - **Use your agent app.** Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code, Claude Desktop — any MCP app, with any model it runs — can now drive AtomCut. It's a row in Connections, on the Agents welcome and in the ⋯ menu, with the exact command for each app (one click for Cursor and VS Code). `@atomcut/mcp` is on npm. - **One click to link.** No token to copy: the bridge trusts AtomCut's own origins, and the tab stays linked — it reconnects whenever your agent starts a session, until you unlink. ### Fixed - **Connections:** the provider list stopped scrolling once you picked one.
  17. v3.0.0

  18. v2.36.0

    ### Changed - **auto layout:** the box drives its text. Resize the box or change its padding and a filled text re-wraps to fit. Resizing a hugging box makes its text fill it, so a button's label follows the button. - **auto layout:** a fixed size holds until the content needs more. Type past a card's fixed height and the card grows to hold the text (unless **Clip content** is on). - **auto layout:** layers set to **Fill** share the space equally, like Figma. A long line wraps to its share instead of pushing the box open. - **text:** inside an auto layout, the text's own Resizing and Box size controls step aside. The layout's W/H (Hug · Fixed · Fill) is the one control. Dragging a layer's box handles inside a layout makes that side Fixed. ### Fixed - **auto layout:** clicking anywhere inside an auto layout box selects it, not only its text. - **auto layout:** removing auto layout from a text in a shape brings the rectangle back behind the text, instead of moving its fill onto the text.
  19. v2.35.0

    ### Changed - **auto layout:** drag a layer to reorder it and the others slide out of its way as you move, in rows, columns, wraps and grids. It follows your finger or cursor and settles into place when you let go. - **auto layout:** gaps and padding show as short lines you can grab anywhere across the gap. Hovering or dragging one highlights the space and shows its value. The pivot mark no longer covers the middle gap. - **auto layout:** layers that are already the same size fill the box, so resizing the box resizes them. Layers of different sizes keep their sizes. - **inspector:** auto layout size reads `W 618 · Hug`, with Hug, Fixed and min/max in its menu. A layer inside a layout shows `W Fixed`, `H Fill` and an Absolute switch. **Auto layout** sits beside Ungroup instead of as a large button. - **render in place:** **Keep original** stays on unless the original is heavy (over 512 MB). Sequences now render as **WebP** by default: transparent, near-lossless, and a fraction of PNG's size. PNG is still there when you need lossless. - **auto layout:** sizing works like Figma: **Fixed**, **Hug** or **Fill** per layer, per axis. Text can hug its words both ways. A layer can't fill a box that hugs, so switching the box to Hug turns its layers' Fill off, and filling a layer in a hugging box fixes the box at its current size. - **auto layout:** text in a layout grows its box. Type more, or make the font bigger, and a hugging box grows with it. - **text in a shape (⇧A on a text and a rectangle):** the padding is measured from where the text already sits, so nothing moves. Text on one line makes the box hug both ways. A text box fills the rectangle's width and the height grows with the words. - **export:** **Rendered layers** only appears when what you're exporting contains a rendered layer.
  20. v2.34.0

    ### Added - **image sequences:** numbered images (`shot_0001.png` … `shot_0240.png`) import as one clip that plays like footage, in the media library, on the timeline or dropped as a folder. The frames keep their original quality and load as they play, so long sequences stay light. Set the sequence's rate in **Timing**. - **frame rate per layer:** any layer can run at its own rate in **Timing → Frame rate**, whatever the comp runs at: 12 for animation on twos, or below 1 for a picture every few seconds. Each picture holds until the next one. ### Changed - **render in place:** the result is real media in the layer's place, a PNG sequence (keeps transparency) or a video, saved to a **Renders** folder in the media library. It no longer turns the layer into a nested clip. Layers with sound get their sound as a linked audio clip. - **render in place:** **Switch to original** brings back exactly what was there, groups with all their layers included. If you changed the render (moved it, faded it, added effects), those changes come back on a nested clip around the original, so nothing is lost. - **export:** **Rendered layers** now defaults to using the renders; choose **Re-render from originals** to export as if every render were switched back. - **cache:** decoded footage has its own switch and memory share. It stays on when the render cache is off, and **Purge** no longer clears it. ### Fixed - **timeline:** loops follow speed ramps and freeze frames. The loop handle, cycle marks and "media ends" shading sit where playback actually restarts, and a set loop length restarts the clip at the right moment.
